FAQ & troubleshooting
Quick answers — offline behavior, moving devices, and what to do when voice or receipt capture isn't cooperating.
Short answers to the things people ask most. If your question isn’t here, the rest of these guides go deeper, and Support can help.
Does anything ever leave my phone?
Your transactions never do. Only three optional features reach the network, and you control all three: exchange rates, broker sync, and an opt-in AI parsing mode. See Privacy & security.
Does Thrift work offline?
Yes. Logging, budgets, insights, net worth, and voice and receipt capture all run on the phone with no connection. Exchange rates are fetched when you’re online and cached for when you’re not.
Voice isn’t transcribing
Voice runs on your device, so it needs the on-device speech model for your language. If it never transcribes, set up on-device dictation once — on iPhone, Settings › General › Keyboard › Dictation (or set up Siri for the language) — so the model downloads. After that it works offline. Thrift won’t fall back to sending your audio online; that’s by design.
A receipt scan came back empty (Android)
On a brand-new Android device the first scan can be blank while the text model downloads through Google Play Services. Give it a moment and try again; it works from then on. iPhone bundles the model, so there’s nothing to wait for.
How do I move to a new phone?
Make an encrypted backup and restore it on the new device — see Backup & restore. Thrift is single-device by design, and the backup is the bridge.
Is Thrift free?
The daily habit — capturing, budgeting, insights — is free. Thrift Gold unlocks the wealth side: net worth over time, investments with XIRR, the FI tracker, debt payoff, and the yearly review. There’s a free trial on the annual plan.
Which platforms is Thrift on?
iPhone, on iOS. Android isn’t available yet.
